Asmara is an Eritrean Restaurant located in Westlands, General Mathenge Drive serving authentic and stylish afro-contemporary cuisine. The restaurant has both an outside and inside seating. Quite spacious and forms the perfect ambience for a group dinner, corporate function or just a date for two. We secured a seat at the lounge area despite not making reservations earlier.

Dining With DisCoucher: ASMARA

Our server was well informed about DisCoucher when I told her that we would be using the voucher. She consulted with her supervisor, ripped off the voucher since i had the book with me and told me the deductions will be made at the end of service. So easy right? To be honest, I imagined a scenario where I would have to explain to the waiter what DisCoucher is all about but surprise surprise!!

Service

The service at Asmara is great, almost too good to be true after my previous experience in my last foodie post. Our waiter was very keen, friendly and our orders came out on time.

The Food

I opted out of a starter while my date choose to have the periperi chicken liver. Which is spicy pan fried liver with creamy sauce served with garlic bread. I tasted it, very delicious, full of flavor that was pleasant and not overwhelming.

For the main course, I ordered the Tsebhi Asa which are fish pieces prepared the Eritrean with mukd chilies and spiced red sauce. I choose vegetable fried rice as an accompaniment. The portion was quite sufficient and very filling although I should have ordered the food hot instead of mild. The fish was cooked perfectly, flaky and the Eritrean spices dominating the food perfectly

My date ordered Tibsi Firfir, which are succulent tender pieces of beef filet cooked in onions, garlic and awaze sauced mixed with injera. The meat lover in him said the injera overpowered the meat, but the meal was delicious, very tender as the fillet is expected and it was good to try some Injera after a long time.

Our drinks however were not so eventful, I ordered a simple glass of Douglas Green Chardonnay while my date ordered a local beer.

Dessert

I am not a chocolate fan, but I decided to try out their chocolate mousse served with chantilly cream. It wasn’t bad. I expected it

My date ordered the assorted icecream vanilla, strawberry and chocolate but I ate it on his behalf since he was pretty much done for the night. I am not a glutton though.
